3. NSA Philosophy Class (Reflection):
Through an intense, journaling- and discussion-
based class, students and staff reflect on
existential topics from “What is success?” to
“What does it mean to be a ‘good’ person?”
An academic forum for therapeutic
discussions about values and life
questions has proved essential to
enhancing the lines of communication
between peers and staff and
understanding the philosophical
purpose of NSA.
Discussion using both real and
hypothetical situations encourages
students to share their thoughts and
make connections between abstract
ideas and real life.
Using our community activities in Costa
Rica as a backdrop to explore cultural
differences has proved invaluable to
broadening students’ perspectives on
cultures, family dynamics, and values.
New Summit Academy Costa Rica
Intensive Summer Session 2005
July 2005:
Summer Session Activities
Between academic semesters, NSA organizes an intensive session
to stay in the academic mode while taking advantage of the
opportunity to nurture skills and talents outside of the classroom.
This July, students are participating in 3 main objectives:
2. NSA Campus Project (Teamwork &
Planning):
In order to encourage teamwork, goal-setting,
planning, and follow-through, NSA students
have chosen a group project to improve their
campus life.
Designing and building their own ping
pong table from scratch.
Researching dimensions, planning a
budget for the project, ordering supplies,
and actually building the table for their
campus recreation addition.
1.  Individual Student Projects (creativity &
productivity):
  Starting with their own
interests and talents, students have
brainstormed ideas to design and produce
their own marketable items in our
community, including:
Making chessboards & carving
pieces out of Costa Rican exotic
woods
Making mancala game boards out of
exotic wood on which he will carve
beautiful Costa Rican images like
toucans and exotic flowers
Learning how to sew to make
clothing, bags, & throw pillows.

We are all very excited to see the finished
products and continue broadening their skills
and self-confidence.
