Michael Ford
Experiential Education Mentor
Anthropology Teacher |
After completing a BA degree in Anthropology from the University of Central Florida, Michael began his first career in technical theatre, starting as an electrician and eventually creating lighting designs for live performances in San Francisco, Orlando and New York. A desire to escape city life encouraged him to buy a ski pass and move to Oregon, where he has happily lived and enjoyed the outdoor lifestyle for the past ten years. His heart led him to begin his second career in education at that time.
Michael has worked with all ages of students and in a variety of contexts. As an AmeriCorps Volunteer, Michael mentored students and built trails alongside members of The Northwest Youth Corps. In his second term of service, he created and delivered original interpretive presentations and programs at Silver Falls State Park, becoming certified in Park Interpretation from Oregon Parks and Recreation. For two years, Michael worked as a field instructor for Second Nature Cascades Wilderness Program, an experience that proved to him the benefit and power of wilderness therapy. It was during this time that he achieved certification as a Wilderness EMT.
In June of 2010, Michael completed a Master’s of Arts in Teaching from Oregon State University and is a certified Social Studies Teacher. Through his past experiences, Michael hopes to bridge the gap between traditional classroom instruction and outdoor education, by guiding students into meaningful connections through interdisciplinary study and natural world experiences. He is preparing an Anthropology class for NSA students, while at the same time diligently working on Spanish fluency.
