New Summit Academy Costa Rica
NSA OBJECTIVES
New Summit Academy Objective #3:  Introspective Skills
PERSONAL GROWTH: INSIGHT & ACCOUNTABILITY FOR INDEPENDENCE
  • Students learn personal success skills as we share all community responsibilities
together.  We gain a sense of accountability to one another for creating a safe, supportive,
cooperative environment that allows students to be themselves while taking responsibility
    for their decisions.
  • Students also learn how to work for what they need and want by participating in jobs and
tasks on campus to earn and save money.  Students are encouraged to create & build in
the wood shop or design another qualified project with staff guidance.  Products may be
sold, donated, or used for campus enhancement and improvement.  A task-oriented milieu
is rich ground for personal growth and progress.
  • Highly-qualified therapeutic staff help create a safe, supportive, insight-driven milieu for
students to grow and mature socially, emotionally, and physically.
New Summit Academy Objective #1: Analytical Skills
ACADEMIC ENGAGEMENT & ACHIEVEMENT:  Students gain motivation &
engagement in learning content and skills needed for college success.

  • Students who are bright, but have struggled with traditional schooling due to attention
difficulties, slower processing speed, or anxiety, find a new sense of motivation,
engagement, and curiosity by learning and producing traditional classroom material in
interesting, unique ways that best fit their particular learning style.  By using Howard
Gardner’s Theory of Multiple Intelligences to frame our instruction and assessment,
students are encouraged to both strengthen their academic weaknesses while
    showcasing their learning strengths.
New Summit Academy Objective #2:  Interactive Skills
EXPERIENTIAL EDUCATION:  Cultural immersion & healthy risk-taking
  • Weekly home stays every Sunday and regular community service directly engage students
in learning about Costa Rican language and culture.  Discovering how another culture
lives is an eye-opening and empathy-building experience that gives students a new lens
through which to view their own society, language and culture.
  • By taking healthy risks in our Experiential Education Program, students overcome
challenges outside of their comfort zone. The self-esteem and confidence gained by these
experiences help students approach future obstacles and challenges in a more positive,
healthy manner.  The Experiential Education program has a great impact on building
empathy skills and a teamwork mentality through a variety of experiences.
