Social Studies
The discipline of Social Studies at New Summit Academy develops minds which are able to synthesize knowledge of people, cultures and events in order to analyze our present and navigate a complex future.
Courses include World History, United States History and Government, Humanities, and Sociology. |
EnglishOur English courses cultivate students’ abilities to think critically by analyzing literature and developing respect for the worlds and people behind it, to communicate effectively through writing and speech, and to create unique pieces of fiction and nonfiction, poetry and prose.

MathMathematics classes are taught to develop the disciplined mind which is able to recognize problems and create logical approaches to solve them. These problems are practical applications which students encounter in their everyday lives, allowing them to synthesize new mathematical skills with the world around them.
NSA mathematics classes include Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, and Precalculus. |
SciencesThe Sciences at New Summit Academy foster a systematic approach to investigating and applying scientific knowledge in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Biotechnology.
Each course pairs knowledge acquisition with the study of the repercussions of scientific advances to promote ethical decision making in the face of a rapidly-changing world. |

ArtsCreative expression – the act of giving imaginative form to original ideas and emotions – is not only an integral facet of our students’ lives at NSA, but provides multiple intelligence-based methods of enhancing more traditional academic pursuits.
Arts classes offered include Visual Arts, Photography, Documentary Filmmaking, Creative Writing, and Digital and Live Music in our state-of-the-art recording studio. |
Learning Spanish in Costa RicaOur location in Costa Rica and travel opportunities throughout Latin America provide our students an immersion experience like no other, building respect for other cultures and a true global perspective.
Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced Immersion Spanish classes complement these experiences along with our homestay program and daily interactions with native speakers, allowing students to build Spanish fluency. |

Global CitizenshipNew Summit Academy’s unique and innovative Global Citizenship program guides students to investigate global issues beyond their immediate environment, respect cultures and perspectives other than their own, and make ethical choices based on the knowledge that their own decisions affect individuals, communities, and the planet.
Global Citizenship analysis and skill development is integrated into all classes so that students are able to synthesize their studies of: human rights, sustainable development, digital citizenship, social justice, conflict resolution, interdependence, ecological stewardship, and diversity with knowledge and skill acquisition in every course. |
Integrated Reading and WritingThe ability to synthesize and apply information across a wide range of subject matter is a key to student success, and NSA’s Integrated Reading Program is intentionally designed to cultivate these skills. Each quarter students collaborate to choose a driving question which guides the texts the entire school reads. Faculty from all departments and disciplines engage in processing the texts with students throughout the quarter. In this manner, students are exposed to a rich network of knowledge and skills which create the stories of our lives.
